If your shingle roof is losing granules into the gutters, the box vents are cracking, and the shingle edges are showing fiberglass, this Roof of the Week from the River Run community in Spokane, Washington, is for you.
This job started the same way most of ours do: a homeowner noticed the signs before they turned into a leak. On our needs assessment, our crew found worn, aging shingles losing their granule coating, a pipe boot that had seen better days, and edges showing real wear after two decades on the roof. Up in the attic, the OSB decking looked clean with no obvious rot or decking issues — a good sign the roof was replaced at the right time, before hidden damage set in.
Tear-Off Day
Once the crew got started, the whole roof came down to bare OSB deck in a single day. With the old shingles and felt stripped off, we could see the deck clearly and confirm what the attic inspection told us — solid sheathing, no surprises. From there:
- Malarkey Permeable Synthetic underlayment went down across the field of the roof
- Malarkey Secure Start HT high-temp ice & water shield was installed at all the vulnerable spots — a minimum of 6 feet up every eave and 3 feet wide through every valley, plus around every pipe, vent, and roof-to-wall transition, exceeding code requirements
- All the old flashing came off and was replaced with new: 239 linear feet of D-style drip metal, kick-out diverters to protect the siding, and 49 linear feet of valley metal
By the end of the underlayment phase, this roof was better protected against wind-driven rain and ice damming than it had ever been — before a single shingle went down.
Install Day
With the deck dried in, the crew moved to the finish work:
- 239 linear feet of Malarkey SmartStart Starter strip
- 32.5 squares of Malarkey Vista shingles, hand-nailed with 6 nails per shingle to back up the wind warranty and guarantee against blow-offs
- 172 linear feet of Malarkey RidgeFlex along every hip and ridge
- Three new 3″ Ultimate pipe flashings, a replaced 8″ stem vent, and two rebuilt 5″ B-vent flashings with fresh paint, cap, and collar
We also upgraded the attic ventilation — cutting a proper ridge vent slot, filling the old vent holes, and installing 42 linear feet of ridge vent so the attic breathes the way it’s supposed to. Good airflow up top means the new shingles (and the deck underneath them) last as long as they’re built to.
The Result
This hip roof came together in Storm Grey with black drip edge, flashing, and vents — a clean, modern look that plays well against the home’s dark trim. From the ground, from the eaves, and from every angle a drone can reach, it’s a tight, uniform roof line with sharp valleys and clean ridge work.
This roof now carries our 30-Year Malarkey Vista package, backed by New Heights Roofing’s own lifetime workmanship warranty — transferable once, guaranteed against defects for life.
If your roof is showing the same warning signs — granule loss in the gutters, cracked pipe boots, curling shingle edges — don’t wait for the leak. We offer free inspections, and the price we quote is the price you pay.
